COURSES TO TAKE FOR TUFTS STUDENTS

Specific requirements for dental school can vary from school to school; however, virtually all require at least two semesters each of:

  • Biology

    • BIO13: Cells & Organisms with Lab (Fall and Summer only)​

    • BIO14: Organisms & Population with Lab (Spring and Summer Only)

    • Many schools require or recommend additional biology coursework beyond these two introductory courses (below are alumni recommendations):

      • BIO41: General Genetics (Spring only)
      • BIO46: Cell Biology (Spring only)
      • BIO115: General Physiology I (Fall only)
      • BIO106: Microbiology (Spring only)

  • General Chemistry 

    • CHEM1: General Chemistry I with Lab (Fall, Spring and Summer)

    • CHEM2: General Chemistry II with Lab (Fall, Spring and Summer)​

    • OR

    • CHEM11: Expanded General Chemistry I with Lab (Fall only)

    • CHEM12: Expanded General Chemistry II with Lab (Spring only)

                                              

  • Organic Chemistry

    • CHEM51: Organic Chemistry I (Fall, Spring and Summer)

    • CHEM53: Organic Chemistry I Lab (Fall, Spring and Summer)

      • Must be taken with or after CHEM51

    • CHEM52: Organic Chemistry II (Spring and Summer only)

    • CHEM54: Organic Chemistry II Lab (Spring and Summer only)

      • Must be taken with or after CHEM52​

  • Physics

    • ​PHY1: Intro Physics I with Lab (Fall and Summer only)

    • PHY2: Intro Physics II with Lab (Spring and Summer only)

    • OR

    • PHY11: General Physics I with Lab (Fall, Spring and Summer)

    • PHY12: General Physics II with Lab (Fall, Spring and Summer)

  • English or writing intensive classes (1 or 2 courses)

    • ENG1: Expository Writing​

    • PHIL1: Intro to Philosophy

    • other history, philosophy, humanity classes

​

  • A very small number of schools require Biochemistry (Tufts Dental School being one of them)

    • BIO152: Biochemistry and Cell Metabolism (Spring and Summer only)​

    • CHEM171: Biochemistry I (Spring only)

​

  • Many schools strongly recommend students to take social science courses such as Sociology, Psychology, or Anthropology.
